I want to take a step back with you and approach this moment in time from a 30,000-foot view. It’s so easy to get bogged down in the headlines flying past us. Sometimes it becomes difficult to see the forest for the trees.

Let’s pause to HOLY SHIT together, shall we? Photo: Daniel Hixon at Shutterstock.

Here’s What We Know

Vladimir Putin spent decades and billions on the disinformation weapons he built. He has been using these weapons to try to elect his friends and partners in democracies all over the world since 2004. He’s attacked over two dozen democracies so far, that we know of.

Check out this quote from a report prepared for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2018:

The Russian government seeks to undermine support for sanctions against Russia, interfere in elections through overt or covert support of sympathetic political parties and the spread of disinformation, and sow discord and confusion by exacerbating existing social and political divisions through disinformation and cultivated ideological groups.

He ordered the hack-and-dump operation of the Democratic Party’s email server to hurt the Clinton Campaign.

Russian spies Maria Butina and Alexander Torshin were busted for conducting a multiyear influence campaign and intelligence-gathering effort against the United States. They targeted the NRA, the Republican Party, and conservative U.S. political organizations for the benefit of the Russian government. They were poisoning a huge swath of the Republican Party ecosystem with propaganda from 2013 to 2018.

A red-headed honey pot! Russian Spy Maria Butina was found guilty of conspiracy against the United States in 2019 and later deported. Photo credit: https://imgur.com/kvol3hx

Trump, a Republican president, should have been incensed that HIS party was attacked, and singled out in such a manner. Every Republican should have been. I’m pissed as hell that Putin fucked with our society so directly and viciously, even if I don’t agree with most conservative policies.

You should notice that they were not incensed. You should notice that they have not publicly evaluated or rectified the damage done to their party.

How the Weapons Work
